Die Monografie Los Carpinteros: Hand Work Constructing the World präsentiert einen umfassenden Überblick über das Werk des kubanischen Künstlerduos und fokussiert dabei auf die Arbeiten seit 2003. Seit ihrem Frühwerk, in dem sich Los Carpinteros mit Traditionen des Handwerks und der Kolonialarchitektur Kubas auseinandersetzten, komplizieren ihre Installationen, Skulpturen und Aquarellzeichnungen das politische Potenzial von Kunst. In ihren aktuellen Arbeiten transformieren sie einfach Alltagsgegenstände wie Betten, Lautsprecher und Kaffeemaschinen auf traum-hafte, assoziative Weise. Dieser künstlerische Prozess der Verfremdung bringt Brüche und Ambiguitäten in der vermeintlichen Realität zum Vorschein und produziert Momente des Absurden wie auch des Unheimlichen. Der Aufbau der Monografie orientiert sich am modus operandi, den Los Carointeros in ihrem künstlerischen Werk verwenden, in dem Ideen in verschiedenen Arbeiten sichtbar werden, an verschiedenen Orten auftauchen und sich in unterschiedlicher Form in den vielfältigen Projekten materialisieren. Texte von Adam Budak, Eugenio Valdés Figueroa, Paulo Herkenhoff, Helen Molesworth und Rochelle Steiner untersuchen das Spiel mit der Semantik der Dinge und ihre linguistische Ambiguität, Momente der Transformation, der Liquidität und der präzis konstruierten Zerstörung. Dabei gehen sie der Frage nach der Verbindung von Ebenen des Politischen und des Ästhetischen im Werk von Los Carpinteros nach.

The monograph presents a comprehensive survey of Los Carpinteros' work since 2003, which represents their critically most acclaimed period. Since their early work, where Los Carpinteros focused on traditions of craftsmanship and colonial architecture as well as on the subversion of the figures of the craftsman and the artist, their installations, sculptures and watercolor drawings are complicating the political potential of art. In their more recent works, they transform simple objects of daily life (such as beds, loudspeakers, and coffee makers) in dreamlike, associative ways. This artistic process of transformation cracks open the ambiguities of reality and, in doing so, produces effects of absurdity and humor as well as uncanny moments. The monograph structurally appropriates the modus operandi that Los Carpinteros employ in their artistic work, in which ideas drift through the work, are materialized in certain projects, and are again contested in others. Texts by Adam Budak, Eugenio Valdés Figueroa, Paulo Herkenhoff, Helen Molesworth, and Rochelle Steiner investigate the semantic play and linguistic ambiguity, moments of transformation, liquidity, and meticulously constructed destructions, following and discussing the intertwining of aesthetics and politics in Los Carpinteros' work
