Ödön von Horváth (1901-1938) ist einer der meistbeachteten Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Wiener Ausgabe bietet eine kritische Gesamtedition seines Werkes: Ediert werden alle abgeschlossenen und Fragment gebliebenen Werke sowie sämtliche Briefe und Lebensdokumente des Autors. Die gesicherten Endfassungen der Texte werden ergänzt durch die genaue Darlegung ihres Entstehungsprozesses und die philologische Neubewertung vieler Quellen.

Mit den beiden Stücken Eine Unbekannte aus der Seine (1933) und Hin und her (1934) lotet Horváth in politisch prekären Zeiten die Möglichkeiten der Komödienform nach zwei Richtungen aus. Eine Unbekannte aus der Seine schließt an seine großen Volksstücke an, doch verleiht der Autor der "Komödie" eine noch stärkere tragische Grundierung. Erstmals werden im vorliegenden Band beide autorisierten Endfassungen kritisch ediert. In Hin und her gestaltet Horváth die Geschichte eines Staatenlosen mit den Mitteln der Posse. In der Entstehung des Stückes, die in der Ausgabe erstmals detailliert nachvollzogen wird, dokumentiert sich sowohl Horváths Kooperation mit dem Komponisten Hans Gál als auch der schwierige Weg zur Uraufführung in Zürich im Jahr 1934.
