Unter dem Begriff der "Rhapsodie" verstand Liszt ein Höchstmaß an musikalischer Freiheit: ein ständiges Umformen und Verändern von Themen und Motiven und damit verbunden ein steter Wechsel der Emotionen. Die erste seiner insgesamt 19 Ungarischen Rhapsodien stellt einem frühen Rezensenten zufolge ein Paradebeispiel dar für die "Kunst der thematischen Behandlung, wie sie kein früherer Meister fantastischer, ausdrucksvoller und erfindungsreicher ausgeübt" habe. Trotzdem geriet das Werk durch die besondere Popularität der noch im gleichen Jahr 1851 veröffentlichten zweiten Ungarischen Rhapsodie (HN 803) mit ihren wesentlich prägnanteren Themen und Rhythmen ins Hintertreffen. Die auf der Basis aller verfügbaren Quellen erstellte Henle-Urtextausgabe gibt nun Gelegenheit, Liszts Erstling wiederzuentdecken.
Für den Fingersatz zeichnet der italienische Liszt-Spezialist Vincenzo Maltempo verantwortlich.

Liszt understood a "rhapsody" to signify the highest degree of musical freedom: a constant process of transformation and variation of themes and motifs, all bound up with constant shifts of emotion. According to one of its early reviewers, this first of Liszt's 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies is a prime example of "the art of thematic working such as no previous master has practised more fantastically, more expressively or more inventively". Despite this, it was somewhat overshadowed by the greater popularity of the Second Hungarian Rhapsody (HN 803), with its considerably pithier themes and rhythms; both were published in the same year, 1851. This Henle Urtext edition, which draws on all the available sources, now provides players with an opportunity to rediscover Liszt's First Rhapsody. Italian Liszt specialist Vincenzo Maltempo provides the fingerings.

Par le terme de «Rhapsodie», Liszt entendait indiquer un maximum de liberté musicale: une incessante transformation et modification de thèmes et de motifs ayant pour résultat de constants changements émotionnels. La première de ses 19 Rhapsodies hongroises, à en croire l'un des premiers critiques d'alors, est un exemple révélateur de l'«art du traitement thématique tel qu'aucun maître avant lui ne s'en était saisi avec autant de d'imagination, d'expressivité et d'inventivité». Pourtant, l'oeuvre resta dans l'ombre de la très populaire deuxième Rhapsodie hongroise (HN 803), elle aussi publiée dans l'année 1851, avec ses thèmes et ses rythmes nettement plus marquants. Le texte de l'édition Urtext Henle, établi sur la base de toutes les sources accessibles donne désormais l'occasion de redécouvrir cette première-née des Rhapsodies de Liszt.
C'est le spécialiste italien de Liszt Vincenzo Maltempo qui s'est chargé de la responsabilité des doigtés.
