Im Zeitraum von nur acht Jahren schuf Beethoven zwischen 1794-1802 immerhin 20 Klaviersonaten, darunter auch seine sogenannte "Grande Sonate Pathétique" op. 13. Sie führt den klassischen Stil zur Vollendung und deutet zugleich mit ihrer stark romantischen Ausprägung schon auf seine heroische Phase hin. In der "tragischen" Tonart c-moll komponiert, weist sie voraus auf die ausdrucksvolle Dramatik späterer Meisterwerke wie der 5. Symphonie oder der Ouvertüre zu Coriolan. Die Sonate ist unter den berühmten diejenige, die technisch am besten zu bewältigen ist, und erfreut sich daher unter fortgeschrittenen Klavierschülern allergrößter Beliebtheit. Die Urtextausgabe des G. Henle Verlags stammt aus der erfolgreichen Beethoven-Werkstatt von Norbert Gertsch und Murray Perahia, wie gewohnt mit Fingersatz und Hinweisen zur Interpretation des großen Pianisten.

In a span of only eight years, between 1794-1802, Beethoven composed twenty piano sonatas, among them his so-called "Grande Sonate Pathétique" op. 13. It marks the consummation of his Classical style, yet also already alludes to his Heroic Period with its intensely Romantic characteristics. Composed in the "tragic" key of C minor, it foreshadows the expressive drama of later masterworks such as the Fifth Symphony or the Coriolan Overture. Of the famous sonatas, this one is the most technically manageable and thus proves immensely popular with advanced piano students. The Urtext edition from G. Henle Publishers hails from the successful Beethoven collaboration between Norbert Gertsch and Murray Perahia, as usual with fingering and interpretive suggestions from the great pianist.
