Beethovens bedeutendsten Beitrag zur Variationsform stellen die zwischen 1819 und 1823 komponierten 33 Veränderungen über einen Walzer von A. Diabelli dar. "Keine Variationen der gewöhnlichen Art, sondern ein großes und wichtiges Meisterwerk" heißt es treffend in der Ankündigung der Originalausgabe. Der Wiener Verleger Anton Diabelli hatte damals 50 Komponisten gebeten, je eine Variation über seinen Walzer für einen Sammelband beizusteuern. Beethoven nahm dies jedoch zum Anlass für eine umfassende Auseinandersetzung mit der Tradition der Gattung. Die auf Basis des Kritischen Berichts der Beethoven-Gesamtausgabe revidierte Urtextausgabe erscheint als Einzelausgabe aus dem Band "Variationen für Klavier II" (HN 1269). Ein ausführliches Vorwort und Bemerkungen informieren über den aktuellen Forschungsstand. Ian Fountain zeichnet für den Fingersatz verantwortlich.

Diabelli-Variationen C-dur op. 120

Beethoven's "33 Variations on a waltz by A. Diabelli", composed between 1819 and 1823, are his most significant contribution to the genre. The notice announcing the publication of the first edition aptly claimed that "These are no variations of the usual kind but a great and important masterpiece". The Viennese publisher Anton Diabelli had asked 50 composers to write one variation each on his waltz, for publication in an anthology. But instead, Beethoven used it for a comprehensive exploration of the genre's traditions. This Urtext edition, revised on the basis of the Critical Report of the Beethoven Complete Edition, is a stand-alone edition taken from the volume Variations for Piano II (HN 1269). A detailed preface and commentary provide information on the current state of research. The fingerings are by Ian Fountain.

Diabelli Variations C major op. 120
Les «33 Variations sur une valse de A. Diabelli» composées entre 1819 et 1823 constituent l'apport majeur de Beethoven à la forme de la variation. «Non pas des variations à la manière habituelle, mais un grand et important chef-d'oeuvre» dit très justement l'annonce de l'édition originale. L'éditeur viennois Anton Diabelli avait alors prié cinquante compositeurs de contribuer chacun à un volume collectif par une variation sur sa valse. Ce fut pour Beethoven l'occasion d'une confrontation en profondeur avec la tradition de ce genre. L'édition Urtext révisée sur la base de l'apparat critique de l'édition intégrale des oeuvres de Beethoven paraît au titre d'une édition séparée extraite du Second volume des variations pour piano (HN 1269). Un avant-propos exhaustif et des observations apportent des précisions quant à l'état actuel des recherches. Les doigtés sont de Ian Fountain.
