Die "Goldberg"-Variationen sind zweifellos der bedeutendste Klavierzyklus des 18. Jahrhunderts. In ihrer überragenden Bedeutung können ihnen nur noch Beethovens "Diabelli"-Variationen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert an die Seite gestellt werden. Bachs eigene Handschrift ist zwar nicht überliefert, sehr wohl aber der von ihm korrigierte Erstdruck der "Aria mit verschiedenen Veraenderungen vors Clavicimbal mit 2 Manualen" (so dort der Titel). Diese Erstausgabe liegt unserer Edition als Hauptquelle zugrunde, zusätzlich wurde der Notentext mit weiteren Quellen verglichen, so zum Beispiel mit Bachs eigenhändigem Eintrag der "Aria" (dort noch nicht als solche bezeichnet) in das Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena.

Goldberg-Variationen G-dur BWV 988

The "Goldberg" Variations are without a doubt the most important piano cycle of the 18th century. Only Beethoven's "Diabelli" Variations from the 19th century can be compared to them as far their far-reaching significance is concerned. Bach's own manuscript might not have survived, but the corrected first printing of the "Aria mit verschiedenen Veraenderungen vors Clavicimbal mit 2 Manualen" (thus the title) has done so. This first edition serves as the primary source for our edition; furthermore the musical text was compared to other sources as, for example, with Bach's own record of the "Aria" (not yet referred to as such) in the little notebook for Anna Magdalena.

Goldberg Variations G major BWV 988
Sans conteste le cycle pour clavier le plus important du XVIIIe siècle, les Variations «Goldberg» eurent une telle portée que seules, au XIXe siècle, les Variations «Diabelli» de Beethoven peuvent leur être comparées. Le manuscrit autographe de Bach n'est pas conservé, mais on possède l'impression originale corrigée de la propre main du compositeur de l' "Aria mit verschiedenen Veraenderungen vors Clavicimbal mit 2 Manualen" (Aria avec différentes variations pour le clavecin à deux claviers), ainsi que le mentionne la page de titre. Cette édition originale sert de base principale à notre édition, mais fut également comparée à d'autres sources, comme par exemple l'«Aria» (le titre est ici différent) se trouvant dans le Notenbüchlein für Anna Magdalena et comportant des annotations de la propre main de Bach.
