Chopin revolutionierte die Etüde - er adelte den Walzer. Sein ganzes Leben lang beschäftigte er sich immer wieder mit dieser Gattung und schuf ein breites Spektrum an Formen, von virtuosen Paradestücken - den Grandes Valses Brillantes - bis zu tiefmelancholischen Stimmungsbildern. Nur eines ist allen Werken gemeinsam: tanzen kann und soll man diese Walzer nicht! Unser Band enthält sämtliche Walzer Chopins, die zu Lebzeiten oder postum erschienen, darunter populäre Geniestreiche wie etwa den sogenannten Minutenwalzer (op. 64 Nr. 1). Dort, wo zwei authentische Versionen des gleichen Walzers überliefert sind, bringen wir selbstverständlich den Urtext beider Fassungen.

Chopin revolutionized the etude - but he ennobled the waltz. He spent much time on this genre throughout his life and created a wide spectrum of forms, from virtuosic showpieces - the Grandes Valses Brillantes - to deeply melancholic atmospheric pictures. All these works have one thing in common: one cannot and should not dance to them! Our volume contains all of the waltzes that were published during Chopin's lifetime, or posthumously, including popular masterpieces such as the so-called "Minute Waltz" (op. 64 no. 1). In cases where two authentic versions of the same waltz have been transmitted, we naturally give the Urtext of both versions.

Si Chopin révolutionna le genre de l'étude, il anoblit celui de la valse. Toute sa vie durant, il revint à ce genre, qu'il embrassa sous toutes ses formes, des morceaux de bravoure - les Grandes Valses Brillantes - aux tableaux imprégnés de la plus profonde mélancolie. Ces oeuvres ont cependant toutes un point commun: il est impossible et interdit de danser sur cette musique! Notre volume comporte l'intégralité des Valses de Chopin, parues de son vivant ou à titre posthume, parmi lesquelles de véritables traits de génie, comme la valse surnommée la «Valse du petit chien», op. 64, n°1. Lorsqu'il existe deux versions authentiques de la même valse, nous présentons bien entendu une version Urtext de chacune d'entre elles.
