Los artículos de esta antología indagan en el concepto de etnicidad en América Latina mediante perspectivas interdisciplinarias. Enfocan la historia del concepto, su significado en diferentes sociedades desde el siglo XIX, así como en los recientes procesos de movilización étnica, por ejemplo, la etnización de la arena política y la instrumentalización de la etnicidad en el contexto de las políticas de identidad, particularmente a partir de la década de 1990. Este último período es especialmente importante en la medida en que indígenas y afrodescendientes se organizan a una escala más global, adquieren derechos y modifican las sociedades y sus marcos políticos.
The articles in this anthology explore the concept of ethnicity in Latin America using interdisciplinary approaches. The foci are on the history of the concept the meanings that became attached to it in different societies since the nineteenth century as well as on recent processes of ethnic mobilization, as, for example, the ethnicization of political arenas and the instrumentalization of ethnicity in identity politics, particularly since the 1990s. This last period is special in so far as indigenous people and Afrodescendants organize themselves on a more global level acquiring rights and modifying societies as well as the existing political frameworks.
