Wenn tausend Blüten den Fasan erklimmen
Austin Eddy formuliert in seinem malerischen Werk Widersprüche, greift auf kubistische Traditionen zurück und sucht die Balance zwischen Figuration und Abstraktion. Seine figurativen Elemente falten sich zu nächtlichen Landschaften, Gebäude werden zu isolierten Ansichten scheinbar klaustrophobischer Räume, schwebende Wolken ähneln knolligen Fingern und alle sind zugleich Porträts, Stillleben und Landschaften. Austin Eddys Werk verweist formal und konzeptuell auf die amerikanische Moderne, das Besondere an ihm aber beschreibt niemand besser als der Künstler selbst: »Ich denke, die Gemälde versuchen ständig, einen Weg zwischen Realität und Abstraktion zu finden. Ich bin daran interessiert, die Grenzen auszuloten, wie weit man die Konversation zwischen beidem ausdehnen kann. Die Gemälde haben ihre Wurzeln in Erzählungen aus dem richtigen Leben, sind aber nicht notwendigerweise daran gebunden, die Realität zu repräsentieren. Um sie an die Erde zu binden, versuche ich, die Zeit zu nutzen. Das Licht spielt eine entscheidende Rolle, wenn man verstehen will, wie diese Bilder funktionieren. Nicht nur im Sinne der Tageszeit, sondern auch im Hinblick auf die mögliche Dauer eines Ereignisses. Der Versuch, einen Nachmittag in einem Moment einzufangen oder die Hektik des Fliegens in der Stille eines Bildes reizt mich besonders. Da ich darauf aus war, die Bildsprache zu vereinfachen, finde ich es wichtig, dass sie durch die Farbe der entsprechenden Zeit in die natürliche Welt zurückgeholt werden.«

As if a thousand blossoms were climbing the pheasant
Austin Eddy s painterly oeuvre formulates contradictions, drawing on Cubist traditions and seeking a balance between figuration and abstraction. His figurative elements fold into nocturnal landscapes, buildings become isolated portraits of seemingly claustrophobic spaces, floating clouds resemble bulbous fingers - and all stand at once for portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. Austin Eddy s work references American modernism both formally and conceptually, yet there is something beyond that, which the artist describes as follows: »I think the paintings are constantly trying to navigate a road between reality and abstraction. I am interested in exploring the limits of how far can you stretch the conversation between the two. The paintings are rooted in real life narratives but not necessarily tied to representing the world truly. To keep them tied to the earth I try to use time. Light plays a crucial role in understanding how these images work. Not only in the sense of time of the day, but also addressing the possible length of time something could be happening. Trying to capture an afternoon in a moment, or the franticness of flight in the stillness of a painting is exciting to me. Because I have pushed to simplify the language in the paintings I find it important that they are like pulled back to the natural world through the color of time.«
