Skulpturale Unabhängigkeit
Wenn man das Werk eines Künstlers über so viele Jahre begleitet, wächst es einem ganz besonders ans Herz - ja, man freut sich über den Erfolg. Und Georg Herold hat wirklich schon viele erfolgreiche und glamouröse Momente, Ehrungen und Präsentationen erlebt. Jetzt, nachdem er im Juli 2017 seinen 70. Geburtstag gefeiert hat, kann er deshalb auf eine eindrucksvolle Karriere zurückblicken und mit ruhiger Hand im Kunstmuseum Bonn eine Retrospektive einrichten. Heute gilt er als eine der prägenden Figuren der letzten 30 Jahre in der internationalen Kunst, unter anderem auch deshalb, weil sein Werk für eine überbordende Experimentierfreudigkeit steht. Dass er einfache Materialien benutzt, wie es rezeptionsseitig oftmals schon durchdekliniert wurde, dass sein Werk voll ironischer Momente ist, dass er mit seiner Arbeit traditionelle Formen bildlicher Darstellungen und insbesondere der Skulptur als solcher stets infrage stellt, das ist alles richtig, doch sollte es nicht den Blick auf eine einzigartige Werkentwicklung verstellen, deren essenzieller Sprung aus den Begrifflichkeiten der Postmoderne in ein von jeder Konvention befreites modernes künstlerisches Werk und, damit verbunden, absolute skulpturale Unabhängigkeit führte!

Sculptural Independence
If you follow an artist's work for quite a number of years, you will grow fond of it - yes, and you will rejoice in its success. Georg Herold has truly experienced many moments of success and brilliance, distinctions and presentations. That is why now, after he turns 70 in July 2017, he can look back on an impressive career, and calmly prepare a retrospective at Kunstmuseum Bonn. He is now regarded as one of the most prominent international art personalities of the past 30 years, not least because his work embodies an exuberant joy of experimentation. The fact that he uses simple materials, as critics have so frequently and thoroughly perused, or that his work is full of moments of irony, and that he always challenges traditional forms of pictorial representation, in particular of sculpture as such, is true, but it should not distract from the extraordinary work development that took a major leap from postmodern semantics to a modernist work freed from all convention and led, subsequently, to absolute sculptural independence!
