Flower are one of the most common subjects for artwork, yet Mapplethorpe excels at bringing something radically new to his flower photographs. Setting them in a universe apart, their poses are classical, reduced to a series of essential forms. Their compositions are profoundly simple but mask a complex dynamic. Each one is evocative, and almost always sexually charged. When photographed by Mapplethorpe, these delicate organisms become almost muscular in their raw power.

Robert Mapplethorpe, geboren 1946, wurde ab Anfang der 1980er-Jahre von einem größeren Publikum wahrgenommen, zunächst vor allem in New York. Viele Persönlichkeiten ließen sich von ihm porträtieren, unter anderem Andy Warhol, Deborah Harry, Richard Gere, Peter Gabriel, Grace Jones, Paloma Picasso und Patti Smith. Es war geradezu in, sich von Mapplethorpe fotografieren zu lassen. Mapplethorpes Arbeiten wurden in den USA häufig in öffentlich finanzierten Ausstellungen gezeigt.
