This Bundeswehr mission story tells of an army in action, of the experience of individual soldiers and sheds light on the relationship between reunified Germany and 'war'. Are German soldiers at war? The Bundeswehr's missions abroad have not only changed the armed forces, but also the political discourse on this issue. As early as the 1990s, the struggle for German participation in the war accompanied the Bundeswehr on its way from the 'army of unity' to the 'army in action'. Since then, over 380,000 soldiers have served abroad. This volume provides access to this complex history of operations by the Bundeswehr from the perspective of military history, the social sciences and from the perspective of selected contemporary witnesses.
