Der Ort Albano Laziale durchlebte von republikanischer Zeit bis in die Spätantike einen einzigartigen Wandel: In einer republikanischen Villenlandschaft wurde Ende des 1. Jahrhunderts n.Chr. eine Kaiservilla angelegt. Ein gutes Jahrhundert später wurde auf dem Areal das einzige dauerhafte Legionslager auf italischem Boden errichtet. Im unmittelbaren Umfeld des Lagers entstand eine Siedlung, die in der Spätantike zum Bischofssitz erhoben wurde. Während die Errichtung des Lagers für die legio II Parthica vor den Toren der Hauptstadt eine entscheidende Zäsur in der Geschichte Roms darstellt, bestimmen dessen Aufgabe und die Erhebung zum Bischofssitz die Siedlungsentwicklung des Ortes bis in die Gegenwart. Das Albano-Projekt untersucht die Siedlungsgenese von republikanischer Zeit bis ins Frühmittelalter. Band I, herausgegeben von Silvia Aglietti und Alexandra W. Busch, fokussiert auf die vorlagerzeitlichen Siedlungsphasen.The site of Albano Laziale went through a unique evolution from the Republican period to late antiquity: in a Republican villa landscape an imperial residence was built at the end of the 1st century A.D. A good century later the only permanent legionary camp on Italian soil was established on the site. In the immediate vicinity of the camp, a settlement developed which was raised to the seat of a bishopric in late antiquity. While the establishment of a camp for the legio II Parthica before the gates of the capital city was a decisive turning point in the history of Rome, the abandonment of the camp and the creation of a bishop's see determine how the settlement developed until the present day. The Albano project investigates the genesis of the settlement from the Republican period into the Early Middle Ages. This first volume focuses on the settlement phases that antedate the legionary camp.
