Die beiden sächsischen Kurfürsten Friedrich der Weise (1463-1525) und sein Nachfolger Johann der Beständige (1468-1532) waren Schlüsselgestalten der frühen Reformationsgeschichte. Als Landesherren Martin Luthers schufen sie den politischen Rahmen für die Ausbreitung und Durchsetzung der Wittenberger Reformation. Die auf vier Bände angelegte Edition verfolgt das Ziel, die kirchenpolitischen Briefe und Akten dieser beiden herausragenden Reformationsfürsten erstmals auf breiter Basis für die kirchen- und allgemeinhistorische Forschung zugänglich zu machen. Zeitliche Grenzen der Edition bilden die innere Landesteilung (Mutschierung) zwischen Friedrich und Johann 1513 und der Tod des Kurfürsten Johann 1532. Dieser Rahmen erlaubt eine Längsschnittanalyse, die die Zeit vor dem öffentlichen Auftreten Luthers ebenso einschließt wie den Übergang von einer ungelenkten reformatorischen Entwicklung unter Friedrich zu einer obrigkeitlichen. Diese Wandlungsprozesse hatten großen Einfluss auf die frühneuzeitliche Staatsbildung und sind zu einem erheblichen Teil in Korrespondenzen und landesherrlichen Anordnungen zu fassen. Band 1 bietet über 600 Schriftstücke aus dem Zeitraum 1513 bis 1517. Sie belegen die vielfältigen kirchenpolitischen Bereiche - von der Pfarrbesetzung über Klosterreformen bis hin zum Ausbau der Wittenberger Heiltumssammlung -, auf die Friedrich der Weise und sein Bruder Johann der Beständige Einfluss nahmen.[Letters and Records Regarding the Church Policy of Frederik the Wise and Johann the Steadfast, 1513-1532.
