Das Hodegeticum des als "Vater der Symbolik" bekannt gewordenen Leipziger Theologen Johann Benedikt Carpzov (1607 1657) ist die repräsentative Predigtlehre der lutherischen Orthodoxie. Der Text von 1652 wird in dieser Ausgabe wieder zugänglich gemacht und erstmals mit einer Übersetzung versehen. Die Einführung hebt die Besonderheiten dieser ganz auf den Herstellungsprozess von Predigten konzentrierten, am Text und nicht weniger am Hörer orientierten Homiletik hervor. Die Schrift ist nicht nur von theologie- und frömmigkeitsgeschichtlichem Interesse. Mit ihrer Ausrichtung auf eigenständige homiletische Kompetenz des Predigers und in ihrer rhetorischen, Intellekt und Gefühl der Hörer ansprechenden Kunst ist diese Homiletik liberaler und moderner, als man von streng orthodoxer Theologie erwartet. Sie sollte in der homiletischen Ausbildung nicht übergangen werden.

The Hodegeticum of the Leipzig theologian Johann Benedikt Carpzov (1607 1657), also known as the "Father of Symbolics", is the representative homiletics of Lutheran orthodoxy. The text, originally published in 1652, is made here once again available together with a translation. The text is of interest not only in regard to the history of theology and piety. With its focus on the autonomous homiletic competence of the preacher and with its rhetorical art, addressing both intellect and feeling of the recipient, this homiletics is proving to be more liberal and modern as could be expected from a strictly orthodox theologian. It should not be neglected by homiletic formation.
