Description

The general scenario of the chemical production in the world is gradually changing under the unavoidable pressure generated in the last twenty years by the need to produce in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

The natural targets of the book are the basic and advanced courses in industrial chemistry, but it can also serve as a basis to treat only basic aspects or specific topics. The text is divided into two parts: the first defines the basic principles of industrial chemistry (from gas properties to catalysis, to energy and mass balances, to reactor design) with a focus on sustainability. The second part of the book analyses a selection of processes in all their aspects. Rather than giving a general overview of chemical processes, for which there are valuable encyclopedias that are regularly updated, it is of greater educational interest to focus the attention on a few specific cases, illustrative of the principles presented in the first part.

Fabrizio Cavani - Full Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna. He is involved in the development of sustainable and low environmental impact industrial chemical processes, in the fields of monomer production, intermediates and energy carriers. He is the author or editor of textbooks on industrial chemistry, oxidation catalysis and valorisation of renewable raw materials.

Gabriele Centi - Full Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Messina and President of the European Research Institute of Catalysis (Brussels, Belgium). He works on heterogeneous catalysis, processes and technologies for energy and chemical production, and biomass conversion. He is chief editor of the Journal Energy Chemistry and the volume series Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis, and formerly of the journal ChemSusChem.

Martino Di Serio - Full Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Naples "Federico II." His activities are focused on the study of low environmental impact processes for the production of biochemicals and biofuels. He has been president of the Division of Industrial Chemistry of SCI. He is the author of numerous papers, book chapters, and patents devoted to catalysis, kinetics, and reactors. He is Specialty Chief Editor (Chemical Reaction Engineering) of the journal Frontiers in Chemical Engineering.

Ilenia Rossetti - Full Professor of Chemical Plants at the University of Milan, develops processes and plants (e.g., catalytic or photocatalytic) to improve the environmental sustainability of basic chemistry and for the conversion of energy and renewable raw materials. She coordinates the GI of Chemistry for Renewable Energy at SCI, is director of her department's Lab-Analysis, has been editor of books and journals, and has received national awards.

Antonella Salvini - Associate Professor of Industrial Chemistry at the University of Florence where he coordinated for 8 years the OpenLab Center for Science Education and Outreach. Scientific coordinator of the laboratory VALORE for the Valorization of algal masses and agro-industrial by-products and the reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, she carries out research on catalysis, biopolymers, adhesive formulations and materials for the conservation of cultural heritage.

Giorgio Strukul - Formerly Full Professor of Industrial Chemistry at Ca' Foscari University Venice for forty-seven years. He was president of the Division of Industrial Chemistry of SCI. His scientific interests are mainly focused on catalytic oxidation, green chemistry issues and enantioselective catalysis, where he authored numerous papers, book chapters, and patents. He received several awards (Federchimica National Award, Paolo Chini Lecture, Emanuele Paternò Medal).
