Debussys Komposition der beiden kurzen Tänze verdankt sich einem Auftrag der Instrumentenbau-Firma Pleyel, die ihre Entwicklung einer chromatischen Harfe mit prominenten Namen vermarkten wollte. Die Tänze lassen sich aber problemlos auch auf der Pedalharfe - die sich im Konzertleben durchsetzen sollte - ausführen. Der archaische Stil mit modaler Harmonik der Stücke, die einen "heiligen" Ritus und einen "weltlichen" Freudentanz zum Ausdruck bringen, verweist auf die Antiken-Begeisterung Debussys und der Kunstwelt um 1900.
Die vorliegende Edition ist die erste kritische Ausgabe der Komposition, für die Autograph und Erstausgabe einer genauen Prüfung unterzogen wurden.

Debussy wrote these two short dances to a commission from the instrument-making firm of Pleyel, which was keen to use famous names in the marketing of its newly-developed chromatic harp. The dances are also playable without problem on the pedal harp, which was to replace the chromatic harp on the concert platform. The archaic style of the pieces, including modal harmonies, used to express a "sacred" rite and a "profane" dance of joy, points to the enthusiasm for antiquity of Debussy himself and of the artistic world around 1900.
Ours is the first critical edition of the pieces, and is based on careful checking of the autograph and first edition.

La composition des deux courtes danses de Debussy doit son existence à une commande de la firme d'instruments Pleyel qui cherchait à développer sa commercialisation d'une harpe chromatique en y intéressant des grands noms. Mais les danses peuvent être également jouées sans problèmes sur la harpe à pédales - laquelle devait s'imposer dans le monde du concert. Le style archaïque, à l'harmonie modalisante, des pièces qui font entendre un rite «sacré» et une danse de joie «profane» renvoie à l'enthousiasme de Debussy - et du monde des arts autour de 1900 - pour l'antique.
La présente édition est la première édition critique de cette composition, pour laquelle le manuscrit autographe et la première édition ont été soumis à un examen minutieux.
