Bachs Toccaten stammen wahrscheinlich aus den früheren Jahren 1707-1713, und sind gewissermaßen seine "Sturm-und-Drang-Werke". Sie sind nicht als zusammenhängender Werkzyklus entstanden, sondern zu unterschiedlichen Zeiten jede als eigenständiges Opus. Wie in der Gattung üblich, betonen sie das virtuose und improvisatorische, teilweise auch rezitativische Element, ohne dabei jedoch Bachs profunde polyphone Technik, seine harmonische Fülle und seinen unerschöpflichen Erfindungsreichtum zu entbehren.

Bach most likely composed his Toccatas in his early creative years, between 1707 and 1713; they can be seen as the products of Bach's own "Sturm und Drang" period, and were not planned as an interconnected work cycle, but as autonomous works written at different times. As was customary for this genre, the toccatas emphasize virtuoso and improvisatory elements, and, occasionally, the recitative aspect as well. What is indispensable is Bach's mastery of the polyphonic technique, the rich harmonies, and the inexhaustible wealth of his inventiveness.

Relativement précoces, les toccatas de Bach datent probablement des années 1707-1713 et représentent si l'on peut dire sa période «Sturm und Drang». Elles ne furent pas conçues comme un cycle, mais indépendamment et à des époques variées, chacune sous un numéro d'opus différent. Conformément au genre de la toccata, elles se distinguent par leur caractère virtuose et la présence d'éléments d'improvisation, parfois aussi de récitatifs, sans pour autant être dépourvues de la solide technique polyphonique, de la plénitude harmonique et de la richesse d'invention inépuisable de Bach.
