Für unsere Urtextausgabe der Klarinettensonate op. 167 konnte erstmals das Autograph zu Rate gezogen werden. "Im Augenblick konzentriere ich meine letzten Kräfte darauf, den selten bedachten Instrumenten die Möglichkeit zu geben, zu Gehör zu kommen", schrieb Saint-Saëns im April seines Todesjahres an einen Freund. Je eine Sonate für Oboe, Klarinette, Fagott entstanden auf diese Weise; die Uraufführungen erlebte er nicht mehr. In Form und Tonfall beziehen sich die drei Bläsersonaten op. 166 -168 auf den galanten Stil des 18. Jahrhunderts und nähern sich damit der neoklassizistischen Bewegung um 1920 an. Humor, Witz und feine Ironie zeichnen diese Bläserwerke aus._

For our Urtext edition of the Clarinet Sonata op. 167 we were able to consult the autograph for the first time. "At the moment I am putting my last ounce of energy into giving seldom considered instruments an opportunity to be heard", Saint-Saëns wrote to a friend in April of the year he died.
A sonata for oboe, one for clarinet and one for bassoon were thus composed; yet he was not to hear the premieres. As far as form and infl ection are concerned, the three wind sonatas op. 166 -168 hark back to the gallant style of the 18th century and thus approach the neoclassicism movement around 1920. Humour, wit and fine irony characterise these works for wind._

Clarinet Sonata op. 167
Pour la première fois, l'autographe a pu être consulté pour l'édition Urtext de la Sonate pour clarinette et piano op. 167. Dans la dernière année de sa vie, en avril, Saint-Saëns écrit à un ami: «En ce moment je consacre mes dernières forces à procurer aux instruments peu favorisés sous ce rapport les moyens de se faire entendre». Il compose ainsi une sonate pour hautbois et piano, une pour clarinette et piano et une pour basson et piano. Il meurt avant la création de ces oeuvres. Quant à la forme et à l'intonation, les trois Sonates pour instruments à vent op. 166 -168 se réfèrent au style galant du XVIIIe siècle et se rapprochent ainsi du courant néoclassique des années 1920. Humour, plaisanterie et ironie fine caractérisent ces trois oeuvres pour instrument à vent._
