Bei dieser mitreißenden Polonaise, der als kontrastierende Einleitung ein nocturnehaftes Andante vorangestellt ist, handelt es sich ursprünglich um ein Werk für Klavier und Orchester. Es entstand in unmittelbarer zeitlicher Nähe zu Chopins beiden Klavierkonzerten e-moll und f-moll und atmet den gleichen jugendlich-frischen Geist. Da das Orchester hier nur eine ganz untergeordnete Begleitfunktion einnimmt, lässt sich die Polonaise auch sehr gut als Soloklavierstück aufführen; tatsächlich ist sie heute fast nur noch in dieser Form auf den Konzertpodien zu erleben. In diesem Sinne, und den Erstausgaben folgend, ist unsere Urtextausgabe nicht als Klavierauszug (mit zwei Klavierakkoladen) angelegt, sondern enthält nur die Solostimme - an den wenigen Stellen, wo das Soloklavier pausiert, ist die Orchesterbegleitung im Kleinstich wiedergegeben.

This rousing Polonaise, which is preceded by a nocturne-like Andante, was originally a work for piano and orchestra. It was written at the same time as Chopin's two piano concertos in e minor and f minor, and breathes the same fresh, youthful spirit. Since the orchestral part is subordinate and fulfills only an accompanying function, the Polonaise lends itself brilliantly to performance as a solo piano piece, and indeed is almost always performed as such in today's concert halls. In this spirit - and following the first editions - our Urtext edition is laid out not as a piano reduction (with two piano systems), but contains only the solo part; at those few passages where the solo piano rests, the orchestral accompaniment is reproduced in small print.

Grande Polonaise brillante E flat major op. 22
Précédée d'un Andante en forme de nocturne en guise d'introduction, cette charmante polonaise fut écrite initialement pour piano et orchestre. Datant de la même époque que les deux concertos pour piano en mi mineur et fa mineur de Chopin, elle est animée de la même fraîcheur juvénile. Comme l'orchestre n'y joue qu'un rôle très secondaire d'accompagnement, la polonaise peut tout aussi bien être jouée uniquement au piano; c'est d'ailleurs ainsi qu'elle est quasiment toujours donnée en concert à l'heure actuelle. En ce sens, et conformément aux premières éditions, notre édition urtext n'est pas présentée sous la forme d'une réduction pour piano (avec deux accolades), mais contient uniquement la partie de soliste. Aux rares endroits où le piano solo fait une pause, nous donnons l'accompagnement orchestral en petites notes.
