Gastoldi (etwa 1550-1622), der als Subdiakon, Sänger und Kapellmeister in der Hauskirche der Gonzaga, S. Barbara in Mantua, und später in Mailand wirkte, schrieb neben geistlichen Kompositionen auch zwei Tanzsammlungen, die zur damaligen Zeit seinen Ruf über ganz Europa verbreiteten. Beide Sammlungen, eine zu 5 Stimmen und die hier vorliegende zu 3 Stimmen, erlebten bis zur ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts zahlreiche Nachdrucke. Als Spiel- und Gebrauchsmusik waren Gastoldis Tänze in ganz Europa populär. Ihre Eingängigkeit und leichte Spielbarkeit empfehlen sich auch heute besonders als Ergänzung des Repertoires für das Zusammenspiel von Blockflöten in kleiner und größerer Besetzung. Den einzelnen Stücken sind die jeweiligen Tonumfänge und Besetzungsmöglichkeiten (zumeist T/T/SB oder S/S/B) vorangestellt.Schwierigkeitsgrad: 2-3

Gastoldi (around 1550-1622) worked as a sub-deacon, singer and kapellmeister at the Gonzaga's home church, S.Barbara in Mantua, and later on in Milano. Apart from religious compositions, he also wrote two collections of dances which made Gastoldi known all over Europe. Up to the first half of the 17th century, both collections, the 5-part Balletti and the 3-part ones, were reprinted repeatedly. Gastoldi's dances were quite popular throughout Europe as utility music. With their catchy melodies and easy playability, they are well-suited even today to complement the repertoire of small or larger recorder ensembles.
