From epidemics in the 17th century and the Lisbon earthquake in 1755 to Guernica in World War II, the essays in this volume trace the development of the catastrophic imagination, relying heavily on pictorial media and different forms of staging. Catastrophe in its modern sense seems to be inextricably linked to its spectacular representation, be it on the stage, on screen or in popular amusement parks. But the modern relationship between catastrophe and spectacle is also increasingly confronting us with the unimaginable side of catastrophe, particularly with regard to the Holocaust and in more recent times to the daily experience of refugees.

The essays in this volume elucidate images of the catastrophes that have inspired them by providing a textual commentary that makes it possible to reconsider how the spectacular and the catastrophic are interrelated. Thus, the essays not only deal with the emergence of the modern spectacular imagination of catastrophe in terms of the history of both discourse and media, they also present themselves as a critique of catastrophe, one based on close readings of the scenes and images in question.

Jörg Dünne ist Professor für Romanistische Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Erfurt und beschäftigt sich mit den spanisch- und französischsprachigen Literaturen seit der frühen Neuzeit. Zu seinen Forschungsschwerpunkten gehört die kultur- und literaturwissenschaftliche Raumforschung mit einem Schwerpunkt auf dem Verhältnis von Literatur und Kartographie. In diesem Forschungsfeld hat er u.a. Anthologien und Handbücher mit herausgegeben und arbeitet derzeit an einer Studie zu aquatischen Räumen in der argentinischen Literatur. Seine letzte Monographie ist 2016 erschienen und trägt den Titel Die katastrophische Feerie. Geologie, Spektakularität und Historizität in der französischen Erzählliteratur der Moderne (Konstanz UP 2017).

Gesine Hindemith ist Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin in der Romanistischen Literaturwissenschaft der Universität Erfurt. Sie verfolgt aktuell ein Habilitationsprojekt zur Verbindung von Gnade und Souveränität in der Tragödie bei Jean Racineund Vittorio Alfieri. Ihre an der LMU abgeschlossene Dissertation erschien 2013 mit dem Titel Sonographie - akustische Texturen im französischen Autorenkino (Stauffenberg).

Judith Kasper ist Dozentin für Romanistische und Allgemeine und vergleichende Literaturwissenschaft am Institut für Romanische Philologie der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Ihre Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der französischen und italienischen Literatur des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, den Holocaust und Trauma Studies, der Psychoanalyse und der Übersetzungstheorie.
