Bernard Brandchaft gilt mit Atwood und Stolorow als Begründer des Konzepts der Intersubjektivität. Daraus entwickelte er in seiner klinischen Arbeit die Idee der 'Systeme pathologischer Anpassung', die es ihm ermöglichte, Patienten mit Zwangsstörungen, Depressionen und Traumata psychoanalytisch zu behandeln, die in der klassischen Theorie als unanalysierbar oder widerständig abgelehnt wurden.An seinen Erkenntnissen lassen sich die intersubjektive Wende in der Psychoanalyse, die er entscheidend mitgeprägt hat, und die daraus folgende Erweiterung des psychoanalytischen Verfahrens verfolgen und nachvollziehen. Doctors und Sorter begleiten die Texte mit Erläuterungen zum historischen Kontext und dem Bezug zur gegenwärtigen Psychoanalyse.
