Aleksandra Domanovic (geb. 1981 in Novi Sad, ehem. Jugoslawien; lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) widmet sich in ihrer künstlerischen Praxis den Verflechtungen von Technologie, Geschichte und kultureller Identität. Ein zentrales Thema in ihren multimedialen Arbeiten ist die Auseinandersetzung mit der Transformation des Westbalkan nach dem Zusammenbruch Jugoslawiens, dem Einfluss des Internets und der Rolle der Medien. Domanovic untersucht die verschiedenen Apparaturen, die dem Impuls dienen, Geschichten über unsere Vergangenheit zu erzählen, seien es Denkmäler oder Statuen, die Massenmedien oder bildgebende Verfahren in der Medizin.
Die erste umfassende Monografie von Aleksandra Domanovic erscheint anlässlich einer umfassenden Überblicksausstellung in der Kunsthalle Wien und zeigt Skulpturen, Videos, Drucke, Fotografien und digitale Arbeiten der letzten 18 Jahre. Sie enthält ein ausführliches Interview mit der Künstlerin von der Kuratorin der Ausstellung, Michelle Cotton, sowie Essays des Kurators Carson Chan, der Kuratorin und Autorin Caitlin Jones, des Journalisten und Schriftstellers Pablo Larios und des Kritikers und Essayisten Marcel Stefancic jr.
Historical Disruptions and the Imprint of Technology
Aleksandra Domanovic's (b. Novi Sad, former Yugoslavia, 1981; lives and works in Berlin) creative practice explores the entanglements between technology, history, and cultural identity. One central concern in her multimedia works is a sustained engagement with the transformation of the Western Balkan after the collapse of Yugoslavia, the influence of the internet, and the role of the media. Domanovic investigates the various technological arrangements that cater to the impulse to tell stories about our past, be they monuments or statues, the mass media or imaging processes in medicine.
Published on the occasion of a major survey exhibition at Kunsthalle Wien, Aleksandra Domanovic's first extensive monograph presents sculptures, videos, prints, photographs, and digital works from the past eighteen years. It contains a wide-ranging interview with the artist by the exhibition's curator, Michelle Cotton, as well as essays by the curator Carson Chan, the curator and writer Caitlin Jones, the magazine editor and writer Pablo Larios, and the critic and essayist Marcel Stefancic Jr.
