Erwin Polanc (geb. 1982 in Friesach, Österreich, lebt und arbeitet in Graz) ist Fotograf und lehrt Fotografie und Multimedia Art an der Ortweinschule in Graz. Für sein jüngstes Projekt Evening Standards hat Polanc zwölf Wochen in London zugebracht und sich den verschiedenen ineinander verschränkten Gemeinschaften, urbanen Schichten und Geschichten genähert. In der Post-Brexit-Atmosphäre zeigen sich die emotionalen und ästhetischen Sensorien einer Generation, die den Optimismus der New-Labour-Jahre nur aus den Geschichtsbüchern kennt. Auf den Straßen in Bow, Mile End und Aldgate East - und nicht im überteuerten Wohnraum - treffen sich unterschiedliche Rhythmen und Geschwindigkeiten, die Start-ups, Spekulation und Entwicklung sowie Immigrationsgeschichten stimulieren.

Titelgebend ist die traditionsreiche Londoner Abendzeitung Evening Standard. Seit 2009 ist sie ein kostenloses, über Werbung finanziertes Gefäß des Großstadtgossip, der Businessnews und der Immobilienanzeigen. Im Kontext des Künstlerbuchs zerfällt der Titel in seine beiden Bestandteile. Auf welche Normen und Standards könnte man sich in dieser digitalen Melancholie einigen, in der nur noch Kameraobjektive und Mikrochips Zeiten des abnehmenden Lichts und Informationen aus einem desillusionierten Milieu kadrieren können? Polancs Fotografien zeigen eine Akribie der Herangehensweise und Bildgebung, die das Sehen selbst und seine Wahrnehmung thematisiert.

Darkly Gleaming Contradictions

Erwin Polanc (b. Friesach, Austria, 1982; lives and works in Graz) is a photographer and teaches photography and multimedia art at the Ortweinschule, Graz. For his most recent project, Evening Standards, Polanc spent twelve weeks in London, charting approaches to the diverseinterwoven communities and urban strata and histories. The post-Brexit climate has brought to light the emotional and aesthetic sensibilities of a generation that knows the optimism of the New Labour years only from history books. It is in the streets of Bow, Mile End, and Aldgate East-and not in overpriced homes-that different rhythms and speeds clash, stimulating start-ups, speculation, and development as well as immigrants' stories.

The title is borrowed from the Evening Standard, a daily paper out of London with a long tradition. Since 2009, it has been an ad-financed free vessel for metropolitan gossip, business news, and real-estate listings. In the context of the artist's book, the title disintegrates into its two components. Which norms and standards might people still agree on amid this digital melancholia, with only camera lenses and microchips left to capture a time of fading light and frame information from a disillusioned milieu? Technically flawless and meticulously composed, Polanc's photographs draw attention to the act of seeing as such and visual perception.
