Welche Künstler*innen gelten heute noch als die Meister*innen der Moderne? Und wer ist in Vergessenheit geraten und aus der Kanonisierung ausgeschlossen worden? Ausgehend von der 1937 in Paris prasentierten Ausstellung Les mai tres populaires de la re alite zeigen das Sprengel Museum Hannover und die Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz mit Welche Moderne? In- und Outsider der Avantgarde künstlerische Positionen zwischen sogenannter naiver Kunst und Avantgarde. Der Katalog dokumentiert die engen Verbindungen von bis heute ganz unterschiedlich bewerteten Künstler*innen, um das Bild der vermeintlichen Außenseiter*innen zu revidieren und eine neue Lesart der Zeit der klassischen Moderne und der Vielfalt der damals gezeigten Positionen zu ermoglichen.
Welche Moderne? In- und Outsider der Avantgarde widmet sich den Werken von Andre Bauchant, Camille Bombois, Adolph Dietrich, Se raphine Louis, Henri Rousseau und Adalbert Trillhaase und zeigt bildnerische Verwandtschaften zu Hauptvertretern der klassischen Moderne wie Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Max Ernst, Felix Nussbaum oder Pablo Picasso. Mit einem Text von Manja Wilkens, einem Essay von Sabine Maria Schmidt sowie einem Vorwort von Fre de ric Bussmann und Reinhard Spieler.

Which artists are still regarded as masters of modernism today? And who has been forgotten and excluded from canonization? Revisiting the exhibition Les mai tres populaires de la re alite held in Paris in 1937, the Sprengel Museum Hannover and Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz present Which Modernism? In- and Outsiders of the Avant-Garde, an exploration of creative positions between so-called naive and avantgarde art, and frame an unwonted perspective on the era of classic modernism and the rich diversity of the art that was displayed at the time. The catalogue documents the close ties between artists whose reputations and market values still diverge widely today in an effort to revise accepted ideas about the ostensible outsiders and reveal the manifold affnities between the "naive" artists and their renowned colleagues.
Which Modernism? In- and Outsiders of the Avant-Garde focuses on the oeuvres of Andre Bauchant, Camille Bombois, Adolph Dietrich, Se raphine Louis, Henri Rousseau and Adalbert Trillhaase and highlights their affliation with the creations of leading exponents of classic modernism like Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Max Ernst, Felix Nussbaum or Pablo Picasso. With a text by Manja Wilkens, an essay by Sabine Maria Schmidt as well as a foreword by Fre de ric Bussmann and Reinhard Spieler.
