Fesselnde Porträts und fließende Pinselstriche
Yongchul Kim (geb. 1982 in Yeosu, Südkorea; lebt und arbeitet in Stuttgart) reflektiert im Medium der Malerei den Ursprung der menschlichen Existenz, die eigene Identität sowie die Einflüsse der Gesellschaft auf das Individuum. Seine Werke halten Momente eines sich ständig verändernden Zustandes fest. Dabei lösen sich die Figuren oft in den expressiven Pinselstrichen auf. Mal treten die Menschen oder Tiere, die Yongchul Kim abbildet, aus den Farbschatten hervor, mal werden sie von ihnen verschlungen. Gleichwohl scheinen sie sich immer gegen undefinierbare Kräfte behaupten zu müssen. Seine Kunst ist ein Fest der Malerei, aber immer auch ein Versuch, den Menschen in seiner existenziellen Gegenwart zu verorten.
Die Monografie zeigt erstmals einen Querschnitt von Arbeiten der letzten Jahre. Den Essay schrieb Dr. Tobias Wall.
Engaging Portraits and Floating Brushstrokes
Yongchul Kim's (b. Yeosu, South Korea 1982; lives and works in Stuttgart) paintings serve as the primary medium for his reflections on the origin of human existence, his own identity as well as the ways in which society influences the individual. His works capture moments in a constantly changing state. The figures often dissolve into the painting's surface. Sometimes the people or animals Yongchul Kim depicts emerge from the shadows of color; sometimes they are swallowed up by them. All the same, they seem to consistently assert themselves against indefinable forces. His art is a celebration of painting, as well as an attempt to locate the individual in the existential presence.
The monograph presents a cross section of works from the last years for the first time. The essay is written by Dr. Tobias Wall.
