This book incorporates Furuyas rich work created during the last 25 years in Europe, Japan and the USA. It provides the first survey of the ways in which this Japanese photographer laconically responded to a variety of subject matter (for example to the Iron Curtain at the Eastern boarders of Austria or the Berlin Wall). His work after the death of his wife shows his precise and clairvoyant use of the camera, his only means of reacting to this personal disaster for many years. The latest work concentrates on his closest neighborhood, transforming the rural character of an European small town, Graz, into images of intense color and magical beauty.

Monika Faber, geb. 1954 in Wien, studierte Kunstgeschichte und Klassische Archäologie. Seit 1979 als Kustodin der Graphik- und Photographie-Sammlung am Museum Moderner Kunst in Wien tätig, seit 1993 auch als Lektorin für Photographiegeschichte an der Universität Wien. Zahlreiche Buchveröffentlichungen, vor allem zur österreichischen und internationalen Photographie der Zwischenkriegszeit. Lebt in Wien.
