Beat Ernst studierte Chemie an der ETH Zürich, promovierte bei O. Jeger und C. Ganter, machte Postdoc am Caltech, und leitete danach bei Ciba-Geigy, heute Novartis, dadie zentralen Forschungslaboratorien. 1998 nahm er eine Professur für molekulare Pharmazie an der Universität Basel an, deren pharmazeutische Fakulität er heute leitet. Neben seiner weltbekannten Forschung, die mit Preisen wie dem Werner-Preis oder dem CIBA-fellow ausgezeichnet wurde, hat er besonderes Interesse an Lehrbüchern, e-learning und neuen didaktischen Ansätzen.
