The late medieval verse dialogue 'Christus und die minnende Seele' portrays the journey of the soul as the bride of Christ toward mystical union in a series of 20 to 24 individual scenes. This study provides for the first time a comprehensive examination of all manuscripts and prints containing the work. In addition, a thorough analysis of the context in which the text is embedded in the manuscrips and of the illustrated broadsheet reveals the late medieval approach to broader and often controversial themes such as mysticism and the role of visual images in religious life and practice.

die der Betrachterin einen immer differenzierteren Umgang mit Bildern abverlangt. Außerdem zeigt der Vergleich früherer Fassungen mit einer späteren Fassung, wie stark sich der Umgang mit mystischer Spiritualität im mystikfeindlichen 15. Jahrhundert verändert hat.
Diese Untersuchung der gesamten Überlieferung aus paläographischer, sozialgeschichtlicher, kunsthistorischer und literaturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive bringt zum Vorschein, wie 'Christus und die minnende Seele' die Spannungen und Gegenpole der spätmittelalterlichen Literaturlandschaft widerspiegelt. Von Laien wie Religiosen, von Männern wie Frauen gelesen, aus Bild und Text bestehend, als Handschrift und Druck, in der Volkssprache und teilweise auch auf Latein überliefert, hat 'Christus und die minnende Seele' zwei Jahrhunderte lang im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes 'weitergelebt.'
