Description
"A History of Russian and Soviet Music, Vol. 1: The 19th Century." (Text in German.)
Soviet musicologists did truly fine philological work with their excellent editions of important text sources. Since the 1950s, they have published the correspondence and literary works of the great composers of the 19th century as well as the writings of important critics and theorists. For the main part, this volume draws upon these publications, where most of the extensive quotations are to be found. This book contains important texts which had never before been translated into German or English. 19th century Russian music began with Michail Glinka, at a time when the awareness for a national music awoke, and - specifically - with the first performance of his "A Life for the Czars" on November 27, 1836.
