Marianne von Werefkin (1860-1938) gehörte mit ihrem Lebensgefährten Alexej von Jawlensky und den Künstlerfreunden Gabriele Münter und Wassily Kandinsky zu den Hauptakteuren der klassischen Avantgarde. Werefkin führte einen erfolgreichen Salon in München; auf die Malerei verzichtete sie zunächst zugunsten Jawlenskys. Erst nach 1906 begann sie im Umkreis der Neuen Künstlervereinigung München und schließlich des Blauen Reiters zu malen. Ihre Werke, die in expressiven Farbkontrasten und abstrahierten Formen Café- und Zirkusszenen, Fabrikarbeiter oder Wäscherinnen zeigen, spiegeln ihr herausragendes künstlerisches Talent wider. Together with her partner Alexei von Jawlensky and her artist friends Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky, Marianne von Werefkin was among the main protagonists of the classical avant-garde. She was active in the circle of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München and finally the Blauer Reiter. Her works, which depict café and circus scenes, factory workers and laundresses in expressive colour contrasts and abstract forms, reflect her outstanding artistic talent and continue to fascinate to this day.
