Der ehemalige Hochbunker am Hauptbahnhof Recklinghausen, im Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Schutz der Bahnreisenden errichtet, wurde schon bald danach aufgesprengt, entkernt und 1950 mit der spektakulären Schau Deutsche und französische Kunst der Gegenwart - eine Begegnung als Kunsthalle eingeweiht. Im Rahmen der Ruhrfestspiele der 1990er-Jahre widmete sich der "Bunker" bedeutenden Künstlern wie Jannis Kounellis, Henry Moore und Konrad Klapheck und wandelte sich endgültig zum Kunsttempel. Ferdinand Ullrich, fast 30 Jahre lang Direktor der Kunsthalle, war mit seinem Objektiv immer dabei und fotografierte unermüdlich für die eigenen Dokumentationen und Kataloge. Dabei faszinierte ihn vor allem das außergewöhnliche Bauwerk. Zu seinem Abschied aus dem Museum legt er einen Fotoband vor, der die wichtigsten Ansichten und Veränderungen anhand von zahlreichen großformatigen Abbildungen dokumentiert.In 1950, the former bunker near the Recklinghausen railway station was gutted and transformed into a temple of art.
