Ernst Oppler (1867-1929) war ein namhafter impressionistischer Maler und Mitbegründer der Berliner Secession. Er zeichnete, radierte und malte Porträts, Interieurs und Landschaften - oft das Strandleben in holländischen Seebädern, worin er Max Liebermann ähnelte. Durch eine Vorstellung des Russischen Balletts für die Mitglieder der Secession 1909 wurde der Künstler zum begeisterten Chronisten des Bühnentanzes. Er zeichnete den Tanz nicht im Atelier, sondern bei Proben und Aufführungen in Berlin, Paris und London - mit beleuchtetem Zeichenstift. Ganz anders als Edgar Degas ging es Oppler nicht um namenlose, posierende Tänzerinnen, sondern um die Bewegung selbst, um die Ballette und die Stars der Ballets Russes wie Anna Pawlowa und Waslaw Nijinsky. Der opulent bebilderte und textlich fundierte Band erscheint zum 150. Geburtstag Ernst Opplers am 9.
