Elephantine ist eine Nil-Insel im Süden Ägyptens. In diesem Handels- und Grenzzentrum lebte eine einmalig diverse Bevölkerung. Verschiedenste Sprachen, Kulturen und Religionen trafen hier aufeinander. Es ist der einzige Ort weltweit, an dem Kulturgeschichte durch schriftliche Quellen über einen Zeitraum von 4.000 Jahren »nachgelesen« werden kann. Tausende Texte sind auf Papyrus oder Tonscherben in zehn verschiedenen Sprachen und Schriften verfasst, darunter Hieroglyphen, Aramäisch, Koptisch oder Arabisch. In dieser weltweit ersten umfangreichen Präsentation werden herausragende Berliner Objekte mit ausgewählten internationalen Spitzenstücken gezeigt.Elephantine is an island in the Nile in southern Egypt. This trading and frontier centre was home to a uniquely diverse population. Different languages, cultures and religions came together here. It is the only place in the world where it is possible to 'read' the cultural history of 4,000 years through written sources. Lepper is curator of the Egyptian and Oriental Papyrus Collection at the Egyptian Museum Berlin, director of the Institute for Ancient Near Eastern and Hellenistic Religious History at the Humboldt University of Berlin and director (PI) of the Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA).
