Malerei als Speicher außerbildlicher Realitäten
In seinen jüngsten Bildtableaus hat Herbert X. Maier (das X. steht für seinen Zweitnamen Xavér) zu erstaunlichen Kombinationen von abstrakten, in manchen Fällen sogar älteren abstrakt-doch zeichnet gerade sie eine voluminöse Tiefe aus. Durch die bis zu 80 Lasurschichten verschiebt sich das äußere Licht ins Innere des Motivs, so als leuchte das Bild plötzlich von innen heraus. Die Konfrontation des Abstrakten mit dem Gegenständlichen beschreibt Herbert X. Maier so: »In der Komplementarität der Bildkonfrontation suche ich die Lücke und den Übergang zwischen den Gattungen, das Geschlossene und das Offene, das Statische und das Fluide, das

Painting as a repository of extra-pictorial realities
In his most recent pictures, Herbert X. Maier (the X. stands for his second name Xavér) has arrived at quite astonishing combinations of abstract, in some cases in fact older, abstract-pastose works with realistic motifs, which he presents as diptychs. It would be virtually t reference to reality, and yet it is precisely these that are characterized by a voluminous depth. As a result of the up to eighty layers of glaze, the ambient light penetrates into the interior of the motif, as if the painting were suddenly glowing from within. The juxtaposition of the abstract with the representational is described by Herbert X.
