Goodbye dead grey towelsEntfernt erinnern die Motive der polnisch-deutschen Künstlerin Magdalena Kita, die diese auf Badetücher druckt, an die obsessiven Arbeiten der Dorothy Iannone. Allerdings holt Magdalena Kita mit ihren farbenprächtigen und ebenso erotischen Motiven noch etwas weiter aus. In ihrer ersten, hier nun vorgelegten Publikation »Californication« versammelt sie nicht nur eine stattliche Anzahl verschiedenster Badetücher, mit denen sie das naiv-lustvolle Bildprogramm eines libertären Feminismus fortsetzt, sondern auch die Dokumentation zahlreicher öffentlicher Performances und TV-Spots, die sie selbst produziert hat. Dabei werden die Badetücher von jungen, knackigen Strandgängern präsentiert, die sich auf ihnen in der Sonne lümmeln oder sie am Strand spazieren führen. Die Bilderzählungen der Tücher funktionieren wie das Trojanische Pferd, zeigen sie doch vieles, ohne etwas zu verraten: Die komplex erotisch aufgeladenen Motive geben den Betrachtern keine Anhaltspunktezum sozialen Verhalten, weder zum Lifestyle noch, konkreter, zu Sex and Gender der Badetuchträger. Die Arbeiten sind ironische Spiegelbilder des aktuellen Social Life, wie es die männlichen Protagonisten an LAs Stränden stilbildend zelebrieren. 2016 bekommt Magdalena Kita dafür den Van Bommel Van Dam-Preis des gleichnamigen Museums in Venlo, Niederlande, verliehen.Exhibition:Magdalena Kita winner of Van Bommel Van Dam Price 2016Museum van Bommel van Dam, Venlo, 15/10-31/12/2016

Goodbye dead grey towelsPolish-German artist Magdalena Kita's motifs, printed on bath towels, are vaguely reminiscent of the obsessive works by Dorothy Iannone. However, Magdalena Kita goes a bit further with her colorful and equally erotic motifs. With this first publication »Californication«, she not only assembles a large number of different bath towels, where she continues with the naively-lustful iconographic program of libertarian feminism, but also presents the documentation of numerous public performances and TV commercials she produced. The towels are presented by young, shapely boys sunbathing on them or parading them on the beach. The images on the towels function as Trojan horses, they show a lot without revealing anything: the complex erotically charged motifs give the viewer no clues to any social behavior, neither the lifestyle nor, more specifically, sex and gender of those holding the towels. Magdalena Kita's works are thus ironic reflections of our current social life as perpetuated in a very particular style by the male protagonists at LA's beaches.
