Aus Anlass der Preisverleihung schafft Thomas Hirschhorn eine "Kurt-Schwitters-Plattform", die den Grundriss des Merzbaus an seinen ursprünglichen Platz versetzt. In Schwitters' hannoverschem Wohnhaus, Waldhausenstraße 5, entstand ab 1923 die erste Merzbauversion. Dort, so sagt Hirschhorn, plant er eine Plattform als "prekären Wallfahrtsort". Zum anderen zeigt er eine Installation in der Eingangshalle des Sprengel Museum. Thomas Hirschhorns Werk zeichnet sich durch eine Synthese von bildhauerischem Anliegen, politischem Engagement und kritischem Denken aus. Zu den größtenteils im öffentlichen Raum realisierten, zumeist temporären Werken des Schweizer Künstlers gehören u. a. das "Bataille Monument", das er 2002 während der documenta 11 in Kassel realisierte, sowie seine Straßenaltäre, die er in verschiedenen Städten aufgebaut hat und Künstlern wie Piet Mondrian oder Ingeborg Bachmann widmete.
