Gewaltdarstellungen auf der Bühne des 15./16. Jahrhunderts Theater historians were discussing the particular type of violence displayed by medieval religious plays long before cultural studies discovered violence as a favored topic. The present volume, which gathers selected papers of the first regional colloquium of the ociété Internationale pour l Étude du Théâtre Médiéval(SITM) in Germany, draws upon recent sociohistorical work on the phenomenon to reconsider past paradigms for the function of violence on the medieval stage, including the concept of ompassio The authors argue that an important key to the understanding of violence in medieval and early modern theater can be found in the relationship between iolentia is and otestas(violence, force, and power). The plays normally do not present violence as an isolated feature, but rather as an expression or a means of power. They thereby address the legitimacy of power, both on the page and in performance. The time frame for the plays under discussion (c. 1470 - 1570) elides the traditional border line between late medieval Catholicism and the Protestant Reformation. The essays clearly reveal that the depiction of violence, while altered in character and function by post-Reformation confessional debates, nonetheless remained a central feature of the new Protestant theater as well. Prof. Dr. Jutta Eming ist Inhaberin des Lehrstuhls für Ältere deutsche Literatur und Sprache an der Freien Universität Berlin. Zu ihren Forschungsschwerpunkten gehören Darstellungsformen des Wunderbaren und historischer Emotionalität in der Literatur des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit sowie die Gattungen des mittelalterlichen Romans und des geistlichen Spiels. Fragestellungen der mediävistischen Gender Studies beschäftigen sie kontinuierlich. Dr. Regina Toepfer ist Professorin für Germanistische Mediävistik an der TU Braunschweig.

Prof. Dr. Cora Dietl lehrt Deutsche Literaturgeschichte (Schwerpunkt Mittelalter/Frühe Neuzeit) an der Universität Gießen und ist Teilprojektleiterin der DFG-Forschergruppe »Gewaltgemeinschaften«.

Christoph Schanze ist Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Professur für Deutsche Literaturgeschichte an der Universität Gießen. Seine Schwerpunkte liegen im Bereich der didaktischen Literatur und der Verbindung zwischen Literatur und Musik.

Dr. Glenn Ehrstine ist Professor für Deutsche Literatur und Internationale Studien an der Universität Iowa. Seine Forschung widmet sich der Verbindung von Politik, Religion und Performanz in Deutschland und der Schweiz um 1200-1600.
