Das Bild vom Mittelalter nicht nur unter der Perspektive der Alterität Modern mediaeval studies nowadays almost habitually model their object of study, the Middle Ages, as alteritary. The concept of alterity has attained a particular significance in Old German studies, which is why especially experts from this field now proceed to critically examine the capability of this term. The weakness of alterity is emerges particularly when used as an historical descriptive term. It presents the Middle Ages and their literature in various ways, not least by emphasizing difference. It therefore seems apposite to take the contrary standpoint and ask whether our notion of the Middle Ages would not become clearer and more complete if we paid more attention to invariables. Such invariables can be derived from general attributes of language, text and literature, but also from anthropology.

Dr. Johannes Keller, geboren 1968, studierte Germanistik, Komparatistik und Romanistik in Zürich (Schweiz), Paris (Frankreich) und Berlin. Er ist assoziierter Professor für Ältere deutsche Literatur am Institut für Germanistik der Universität Wien. Prof. Dr. Elke Koch, geboren 1973, studierte Germanistik, Anglistik und Politikwissenschaft in Marburg und Berlin. Sie ist Professorin für Ältere deutsche Literatur und Sprache an der Freien Universität Berlin. Prof. Dr. Florian Kragl, geboren 1979, studierte Deutsche Philologie und Musikwissenschaft in Wien. Er ist Professor für Deutsche Philologie im europäischen Kontext an der Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg. Prof. Dr. Michael Mecklenburg, geboren 1962, studierte Germanistik, Religionswissenschaften und Publizistik in Berlin. Er ist Professor für Germanistische Mediävistik an der Universität Kassel. Matthias Meyer ist Universitätsprofessor für Ältere deutsche Sprache und Literatur am Institut für Germanistik der Universität Wien. Prof. Dr. Andrea Sieber, geboren 1968, studierte Germanistik, Biologie und Sportwissenschaft in Rostock und Berlin. Sie ist Professorin für Ältere Deutsche Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Passau.
