Data-based value creation is becoming increasingly important in the digital economy. Companies and public institutions are faced with the challenge of sharing data across organizational boundaries in a sovereign, interoperable and trustworthy manner. The European Data Strategy creates a regulatory framework for this with the aim of establishing a single market for data. Data spaces, federated data infrastructures, are considered a central concept for the implementation of this endeavor.
This dissertation examines fundamental, technical and economic aspects of data sharing infrastructures in six scientific publications. The focus is on data management concepts, architectures and design options for data spaces and their business models. The work provides theoretically founded and practical artifacts for the design of data spaces and addresses current research questions on sustainable value creation and data-based innovation.
