Iron deficiency states without anaemia are frequently found in countries with normal nutrition, and countries with chronic malnutrition have a high prevalence of people with iron deficiency anaemia. Anaemia and iron deficiency are among the top causes of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Successful iron therapy depends on the correct diagnosis as well as the choice of effective iron preparations.
