Hannah Arendts Totalitarismustheorie ist einer der wichtigsten Beiträge zur politischen Theorie und Historiografie. Ein Buch von verstörender Aktualität.In diesem Buch, das in drei Teilen die Themen Antisemitismus, Imperialismus und Totalitarismus behandelt, untersucht Arendt die historischen Entwicklungen, die die Errichtung und Funktionsweisen totalitärer politischer Systeme im nationalsozialistischen Deutschland und in der Sowjetunion unter Stalin ermöglichten. Das Buch wurde innerhalb kürzester Zeit zum Standardwerk der noch jungen Totalitarismusforschung. Es erschien 1951 zunächst in englischer Sprache, 1955 folgte eine von Arendt selbst erstellte deutsche Fassung. 1958 ersetzte Arendt in einer englischsprachigen Neuauflage die »Concluding Remarks« durch ein neues Kapitel mit dem Titel »Ideology and Terror« und fügte einen Epilog über die Ungarische Revolution von 1956 hinzu.Band 5 der Kritischen Gesamtausgabe versammelt und kommentiert die Buchfassungen letzter Hand, teilweise ergänzt durch frühere Fassungen, sowie alle Aufsätze, Rezensionen, Vortragstexte, Exposés und Typoskripte aus dem Nachlass, die in engem Zusammenhang mit dem Werk stehen. Diese Ausgabe ermöglicht es endlich, Arendts Hauptwerk in seiner Genese zu verstehen, im Kontext ihrer Schriften aus den 1930er bis 1950er Jahren zu verorten und historisch neu zu bewerten.In this book, which deals with the topics of anti-Semitism, imperialism, and totalitarianism in three parts, Arendt examines the historical developments that enabled totalitarian political systems in Nazi Germany and in the Soviet Union under Stalin. The book quickly became a standard work in the emerging field of studies on totalitarianism. First published in English in 1951, Arendt herself rewrote it for the German version published in 1955. In 1958, Arendt replaced the "Concluding Remarks" in a revised English edition with a new chapter on "Ideology and Terror" and added an epilogue on the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.Volume 5 of the Critical Edition presents the final versions of the book with a scholarly apparatus and detailed annotations, including unknown earlier drafts of Arendt's texts, as well as a comprehensive collection of essays, reviews, lectures, exposés, and typescripts from Arendt's archives. This edition enables readers for the first time to understand the genesis of Arendt's eminent work, to situate it in the context of her writings at the time, and to reevaluate these writings on totalitarianism both from a historical and contemporary perspective.
