Description
This volume examines the ways in which ancient historians described periods of difficulty. For such periods the modern era has adopted the term 'crisis' as a catch-all. People in antiquity, by contrast, did not use this term in the familiar modern sense. This volume demonstrates the manifold approaches adopted by the ancients when trying to grasp what we can so easily subsume under one concept.
Tobias Joho teaches Greek and Latin language and literature at the Department of Classics at the University of Berne. His main research interests are Thucydides and the engagement of modern authors (e.g. Goethe and Burckhardt) with classical antiquity.
Gunther Martin teaches at the Universities of Basel and Berne. Late antique historiography is one of his main research areas.
