Die Gemälde von Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890), dem großen Maler des Lichts und der Felder der Provence, wurden in der Zeit nach seinem Tod bis zum Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges zum Inbegriff moderner, internationaler Kunst. In Deutschland wurde van Gogh wie in keinem anderen Land verehrt: Auf Ernst Ludwig Kirchner und die Brücke-Künstler übte van Goghs Technik, sein kraftvoller Pinselduktus und der farbig stark kontrastierende Malstil, sowie die Strahlkraft seiner leuchtenden Farbpalette eine große Faszination aus. Wassily Kandinsky und die Künstler des Blauen Reiters schätzten van Goghs Abkehr von der sichtbaren Wirklichkeit, seine Durchdringung des Wesens der Natur. The paintings by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), one of the great painters of light and the fields of Provence, became the epitome of modern, international art during the period after his death up to the outbreakof World War I. In no other country was van Gogh so admired as he was inGermany: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and other artists of Die Brücke (The Bridge) were fascinated by van Gogh s technique, his powerful brushwork, and the strongly contrasting colors of his style, as well as dynamic aura of his glowing palette.Vassily Kandinsky and the artists of the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider)movement esteemed van Gogh for rejecting visible reality and penetrating theessence of nature. Austrian artists Egon Schiele and Oscar Kokoschka, on theother hand, were especially impressed by the soulful expression of van Gogh sart and his insightful psychological portraits.
