Der erste Band der Korrespondenz enthält die zwischen Dezember 1683 und Februar 1700 verfassten einhundert Briefe. Die Erläuterung der einzelnen Texte wird durch sechs Appendizes ergänzt, die u. a. weiteres Archivmaterial zur Verfügung stellen. Der Leser erfährt, wie der junge Shaftesbury sowohl in die Rolle des Familienoberhauptes und des Grundherrn hineinwächst als auch sich gleichzeitig im politischen Leben engagiert, in der Lokal-, der Landes- und Kolonialpolitik und im Parteienwesen. Zugleich sehen wir ihn beim Studium jener literarischen und philosophischen Texte, die sein Leben und Werk prägen sollten. Auch die wichtigste Phase seiner persönlichen Beziehung zu John Locke fällt in diese Zeit (1689-1694). Diese frühen Briefe zeigen auch Shaftesburys Eintritt in verschiedene, teils weniger bekannte, gesellschaftliche und intellektuelle Netzwerke der Zeit.

The first complete edition of the correspondence, these volumes provide all the letters from and to Shaftesbury, which today are mainly kept in British archives, in their original form or as a copy. Concise explanations shed light on the biographical and historical background. The letters enable the reader to gain new insight into the earl's private life and political activities, and in addition shed new light on his relationships to other intellectuals of his time. Reading this correspondence will unquestionably provide Shaftesbury researchers with new inspiration in the coming years.

The first 100 of the extant letters-they span the period December 1683 to February 1700, and their annotation is supplemented with six appendices that present archival and other material-show us a young Shaftesbury growing into the role of paterfamilias and, at the same time, immersing himself in the world of local, national, colonial, and party politics. Parallel to that, we see him deep in study, absorbed in the literature and thought that was to shape his later life and works; it is here that we find the most definitive and personally closest period (1689 to 1694) in his relations with John Locke. This early correspondence also illuminates his early involvement in various social and intellectual, public and less publicised networks of the day.
