Pärts Chormusik erinnert in mancher Hinsicht an die byzantinische bzw. altrussische Ikonenmalerei: Ein Thema religiösen Inhalts wird aus der innersten Tiefe der Seele nach außen projiziert. Jegliche überflüssige Ausschmückung wird dabei vermieden, die absolute Reinheit des religiösen inneren Empfindens steht im Vordergrund der künstlerischen Gestaltung. Eine Verbindung der Psalmen zum Neuen Testament ist dadurch hergestellt, dass zwischen den ersten und zweiten Psalm das "Ehre sei dem Vater..." hineingestellt wurde. Der erste der beiden Psalmen ist ein vierstimmiger, homophoner Satz, der in verschiedene Abschnitte geteilt ist und auf die fünf Stimmen so verteilt wurde, dass eine der fünf Stimmen pro Abschnitt jeweils pausiert. Dadurch erklingen manche Abschnitte in höherem Register (wenn etwa der Bass pausiert), andere in tiefem Register (wenn der Sopran pausiert). Der kurze Einschub "Ehre sei dem Vater ... " ist dreistimmig gesetzt und die Musik bewegt sich in gleichmäßigen, feierlichen Halbe-Noten. Auch hier hat Pärt die Tonlage der drei Stimmen quasi "instrumentiert", durch Abwechslung und Verteilung auf alle fünf Stimmen. Der zweite Psalm ist nur den drei Männerstimmen vorbehalten. In schlichter Ergebung wird mit dem wenigsten an Aufwand tiefe meditative Ruhe erzielt.
