Die Geschichte des Landtages ist untrennbar mit der Geschichte der Steiermark verbunden. Ausgehend von einem historischen Überblick über die wesentlichen Stationen von der Landeswerdung im 12. Jahrhundert bis zum Bundesland Steiermark wird die Geschichte des Landtages bis heute dargestellt. Wie das steirische Landesparlament heute aufgebaut ist und welche Kompetenzen es hat, wird in einem eigenen Abschnitt übersichtlich vermittelt. Seit dem Ankauf eines eigenen Hauses für die Stände in der Herrengasse (1494) entwickelte sich das im 16. Jahrhundert als prachtvoller Monumentalbau ausgestaltete Landhaus zum
ständigen Sitz des Landtages. Die Baugeschichte des Landhauses wird ebenso dargestellt wie die künstlerische Ausgestaltung von Rittersaal, Landtagskapelle oder Landstube.

Inseparably connected to the history of Styria, the history of the Landtag up to today is told in an overview outlining the most important stages starting from the birth of the Land in the 12th century to the Federal State of Styria. The way the Styrian State Parliament is structured and the powers it has are clearly explained in a separate section. The Landhaus has constituted the permanent seat of the Landtag ever since a building was purchased in the Herrengasse in 1494 specifically to accommodate the requirements
of the Styrian estates. It was redesigned as a magnificent monumental structure in the 16th century. The construction history of the Landhaus is explored in the same meticulous detail as the artistic decoration of the Rittersaal, the Landtag chapel and the Landstube.

Josef Riegler, Hon.-Prof. Dr. MAS (Geschichtsforschung und Archivwissenschaft), Jahrgang 1951, studierte in Graz Geschichte und Anglistik und absolvierte den Ausbildungskurs am Institut für Österreichische Geschichtsforschung in Wien. Er ist Direktor des Steiermärkischen Landesarchivs, lehrt an der Universität Wien Archivwissenschaft, ist Mitglied der Historischen Landeskommission für Steiermark und seit 2005 Präsident des Verbandes Österreichischer Archivarinnen und Archivare. Zu seinem OEvre gehören zahlreiche Monographien und Aufsätze zu landes- und regionalgeschichtlichen sowie archivwissenschaftlichen Themen. Prof Josef Riegler MAS (historical research and archival science), born 1951, studied history and English in Graz and completed the training course at the Institute of Austrian Historical Research in Vienna. He is Director of the Styrian Provincial Archives, lectures on archival science at the University of Vienna, is a member of the Historical Commission of the Province of Styria and was President of the Association of Austrian Archivists 2005 until 2013. His published works include numerous monographs and essays on topics covering the history of the Land and its regions as well as issues relating to archival science.
