Description
(Text)
This study comprises of two parts one being a comprehensive review of the past studies done on Sinharaja forest and other one being the analysis of growth rate variation with time for Sinharaja tree species. Past studies have covered most of the areas of ecology and dynamics at Sinharaja but upto date no study has done on longitudinal analysis of growth rates of the Sinharaja tree species. Therefore the second part of this study has been carried out with aid of the secondary data from the 25ha Sinharaja forest dynamic plot which are collected by the Center for Tropical Science. Tree data from the three censuses 1994-1996, 1999-2003 and 2005 has been used to the analysis where growth rate is considered as the annual change of DBH. The methodology used in this study is hierarchical multilevel modeling and its extension to the longitudinal analysis of repeated measures. The analysis has been carried out using two alternative methods: considering a linear change of growth rate with time and the growth rate change from census to census without such consistency.
