Myths are cultural and historical documents of extraordinary importance. Often they represent the oldest written relics still extant from a particular culture. They enable us to glimpse at the worldviews of ancient civilizations. Yet myths are more than mere relics of bygone times: they are still alive and continue to matter in present-day society.

Klaus Antoni, geb. 1953, ist Japanologe mit kulturwissenschaftlichem Schwerpunkt und seit 1998 Lehrstuhlinhaber an der Universität Tübingen. 1991 erhielt er den internationalen Forschungspreis der Tamaki-Foundation an der Universität Wien. Gastprofessuren führten ihn nach Ôsaka und an das Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies (Harvard University). Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte sind die Geistes- und Religionsgeschichte Japans, die Kulturtheorie (u. a. Stereotypen- und Märchenforschung) sowie das Verhältnis von Religion (Shintô) und Ideologie im frühen und modernen Japan.
